Try, try and you will succeed
It is the dream of every woman to marry and have children. My mother and sisters were very worried: I'd crossed 30 and was still single. When I finally tied the knot with a person working in the police service, my family members were overjoyed that my future was now secure.
The nuptial night is when a young bride's dreams come true. As far as I am concerned, that special night was the only time I experienced the bliss of matrimony -- and it was also the last. All the days that followed were sheer agony -- I would get beaten and kicked regularly. My new life was a battlefield. I would be sent away to my parents at regular intervals.
One fine day I decided that enough was enough. I left my husband and returned to the security of my maternal home. One day, I chanced to watch a television programme, Dr Kamala Selvaraj was being interviewed. I decided to become a mother despite the fact that my marriage was now broken. I went to G G Hospital. For six long months I did not get the opportunity to meet Dr Kamala Selvaraj. I was however confident that once I did get to meet her and tell her my story; she would help me achieve what I wanted - to become a single mother. My efforts and faith were not in vain. On hearing me out Dr Kamala Selvaraj fixed the date to begin treatment within 15 days. It is a day I can never forget.
After examining me Dr Kamala initiated the treatment that involved fertilizing my egg with that of a donor sperm. There were others undergoing a similar procedure but only my case turned out to be a success.
The moment Dr Kamala Selvaraj discovered that I was pregnant, she was eager to tell me the news... but I could hear nothing. When everyone at the hospital rushed to congratulate me, I was overwhelmed.
Accustomed as I was to misfortune, when the angel of fortune came visiting, in the person of Dr Kamala, I was utterly unprepared. When my mother helped me with expenses -- for my treatment and everyday requirements -- my sisters did not stop her; they were cooperative. That God opens another door when one door shuts is the truth as far as I am concerned.
During the seventh month of my pregnancy my mother invited family and friends to celebrate, conducting the Valaikaapu ritual. I sent an invite to my husband but he did not come. Maybe he felt guilty that he could not give me what Dr Kamala had so generously showered on me. When the baby arrived I named him after Ganesha the obstacle remover and Balaji the giver of boons. Ganesh Balaji is today a district-level yoga champion. He wins several prizes at school.
For giving me a reason to live and remain interested in life -- by helping me have a baby of my own -- I am eternally grateful to Dr Kamala Selvaraj.
